The Titanic’s final moments saw her stern rise into the night sky

In the last stage of the sinking of RMS Titanic, the bow had already flooded heavily and pulled the ship downward, forcing the stern to lift high out of the water. As structural stress built up, the ship broke apart between the third and fourth funnels. The stern briefly settled after the breakup, giving a short and terrifying pause before it began its final plunge. As water rushed in, it lost buoyancy and dropped almost vertically, with survivors later recalling the sound of metal tearing and the sudden silence before it disappeared beneath the surface.

The scene was recreated in Titanic with a strong focus on realism. James Cameron used a combination of large scale physical sets and advanced CGI, guided by research from Ken Marschall. The film shows the stern twisting and cracking under stress before sinking, closely matching modern understanding of how the breakup and final descent likely happened, which is also supported by the heavily damaged condition of the stern section found on the seabed.
